For the exhibition titled “The Immurement”, it was required to create work in line with place and subject. The exhibition was located at the Crypt, St.Pancras Church, where the walls were used as a shelter during the world war. The word Immurement is a form of imprisonment, usually for life, in which a person is placed within an enclosed space with no exits. I decided to lean on the historical facts about the crypt and create these cement pillows that represent all of those who were forced to find shelter inside these walls, who suffered in this space for who knows how long. Through the shape and form of these pillows, I try to tell the stories of these men, women, and children, imagining those long and endless nights, the absence of comfort, rest, and sleep. These privations are carved in cement, a cold and hard material, in conflict with the object it represents a pillow.
